In addition to biology, I completed a second major in Creative Writing. I completed a senior thesis in it, which was a 60 page narrative, and I defended that thesis to a panel of English professors who awarded me the highest level of honors. My writing has been published in the local zine Dirt, in the CU Honors Journal, and in The Emerald, the University of Oregon’s school newspaper. My fiction was awarded the Evan Wolfson Prize in LGBTQ Studies for a Creative Work in 2016.
I believe good fiction can come from a life as a scientist and good science can come from a life as a writer. The field of biological research is entrenched in storytelling, and I will continue to seek out opportunities for narrative outreach.
I have not included any samples of my work here, but would be happy to share them upon request.
The last few books that I read were:
Chemistry: A Novel by Weike Wang
Keith Haring Journals by Keith Haring
Florida by Lauren Groff
Less by Andrew Sean Greer
Slow Lightning by Eduardo C. Corral
Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich
Bread Matters by Andrew Whitley
